Monkey King Bar
Cost: 5400
+88 Damage, +15 Attack speed
35% chance to mini-bash for 100 damage.
True strike

Roughly equivalent to +123 damage, +15% dps, true strike and minibash.


Daedalus
Cost: 5550
+81 Damage
25% 2.4x Damage critical strike chance.

Roughly equivalent to +81 damage and +35% dps.


N.B.
- from a dps perspective, for heroes that already have a lot of damage (~160+), Daedalus is the better item choice.
- illusions benefit from critical strike but not from mini-bash chance.

However!
Against an opponent with evasion, say from butterfly (35% evasion),
the benefits of true strike increase the effectiveness of monkey king bar from +15% dps to (1.15 * [100/65]) = 77% overall dps increase.

+123 damage, + 77% dps.

Feel free to check my math, it's been awhile, etc., but the principles are correct.

Lane Control

All things equal, in theory, a lane will not move if undisturbed because both sides spawn the same creeps. In practice this equilibrium doesn't actually happen because of random variance in the game.

There are three primary ways of pushing a lane:

1) Attack the enemy creeps.

2) Attack the enemy hero to draw the aggro from the enemy creeps. Your creeps will attack his creeps and his creeps will attack you. (You do this often on purpose in mid 1v1. In the defensive trilane it's a mistake.)

3) A lane pushed to a tower will have its direction reversed by the tower because the tower adds dps to the defending side.

These lead directly to basic skills of lane control:

1) At minimum, you must deny your own creeps as much as you attack the enemy ones in order to maintain lane equilibrium. It is usually better to start denying at 50% in order to have the lane pushing into you and so you can last hit your own.

2) As a support you should let the enemy wave through before you start right clicking the off-laner, in order not to draw aggro.

Common pitfalls:

1) Letting the last, ranged creep in a wave hit you instead of your ranged creep. It dies before your ranged creep falls below 50% and you are stuck with double ranged lane.

2) Returning creeps used to jungle to the lane. The carry can somewhat allow for this possibility by not creeping the wave under the tower and running around with it (a la burning)

3) Skilling Luna glaives, Drow aura, etc. too early or not micro-ing PL illusions, etc.

Customize dota with console commands

First enable console:

Steam > Library > Right click Dota 2 Properties > Set Launch Options > add "-console"

In Dota 2:

Settings > Metagame > set a console hotkey, I use numpad minus


I use four console commands:

dota_range_display 1150
dota_force_right_click_attack 1
dota_disable_range_finder 0
dota_minimap_hero_size 900

Explanations:

dota_range_display 1150

This permanently displays a 1150 radius circle. True blink dagger range is about 1150. If you click exactly 1150 it will blink that far, if you click further than 1150 it only blinks about 1100. Experience range is also about 1150~, so when you're off-laning you can stand exactly in experience range, etc. Pudge hook is 1300.


dota_force_right_click_attack 1

You can deny creeps without a-attacking, just right click to deny.


dota_disable_range_finder 0

Changes the way ability ranges are shown, limited usefulness.


dota_minimap_hero_size 900

Makes minimap hero icons bigger, so when you press alt you can actually tell what the heroes are.


To enable commands when dota 2 launches automatically, create a file "autoexec.cfg" in folder Steam > steamapps > common > dota 2 beta > dota > cfg

with your console commands

Pull at the written time and move to the square. Wait for the baddies to attack you and then as the projectile is in the air immediately pull back to the creep wave line to aggro them.
