how to choose watermelons (watermelon season starting again..)

in general, ugly fruit tends to taste better. with watermelons, you want ones that are relatively heavy and that have a yellowish area. the yellow area is where it was sitting in the dirt ripening under the sun.

my summer drink of 2012

fill a glass with ice and water almost to the top
add some pernod (ricard is fine too) and a slice of lemon peel. you want a cross section with just a tiny amount of pulp. stir imbibe and repeat

if you want to be fancy you could stick a lemon wedge on the edge of the glass instead but when you're drinking alone it's too much fuss. when you garnish a drink or a plate it's so you smell the the oils and stuff in addition to the main sense of taste.

also with pernod make sure you dilute it well, have a good water-pernod ratio otherwise it's gross. this isn't something you get hammered with obv..

I now typically use lemon peels much much more than the juice... I'm at a point in life where I just want the essential oils without anything acerbic

I've been dieting again and drinking a lot of broth

boil half a bouillon cube in a couple large bowls of water, and season as you would a soup.

try adding a dash of tabasco, tapatio
boiling miso with the stock
chopped garlic
etc.

hot stock will occupy you for awhile until the craving is gone and it's low calories

so i go into this taqueria after getting a haircut at like 2pm. there's this table of 4 mexicans, and i'm all like

this is pretty chill and cozy you know, afternoon bite in a swell joint that's empty but not completely
